How to Choose a Web Design Company in Sri Lanka

July 22, 20266 min read

There are a lot of web design companies in Sri Lanka, and their portfolios all look reasonably similar on a laptop screen in good lighting. The differences that actually matter (how the site performs on a customer’s phone, whether it can be found on Google, what happens if you need a change in year two) are exactly the things a portfolio page doesn’t show you.

Here’s what to check instead.

Load their previous work on your phone, on mobile data

Not on the agency’s WiFi, not on your laptop. Turn off WiFi, open three or four sites from their portfolio, and time how long each one takes to become usable. If a design agency’s own showcase sites take five or six seconds to load, that is exactly what you’re signing up for: a beautiful design that most visitors never get to see, because they’ve closed the tab first.

Ask what happens after launch, specifically

“We offer support” means nothing on its own. Ask exactly what’s included, for how long, and what it costs once that period ends. Get this in writing before you sign, not after. A vague answer here is one of the more reliable signs of a rushed operation.

Ask who actually owns the site

Some agencies build on platforms or accounts they control, which quietly makes you a tenant of your own website. Ask directly: do I own the domain, the hosting account and the source code outright, or does something break if I leave? A confident yes, with no hedging, is what you want to hear.

Check whether SEO is a real conversation or a checkbox

Ask what SEO work is actually included, not whether SEO is “included.” A real answer covers technical foundations (site speed, mobile usability, structured data) plus realistic expectations about timeline. A vague answer (“yes we do SEO”) with nothing underneath it usually means nothing is actually being done.

It’s also worth asking whether they’ve heard of GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, the practice of making sure AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini can find and recommend your business. It’s still new enough in Sri Lanka that most agencies haven’t started thinking about it, which is either a gap or an opportunity depending on which side of it you end up on. We’ve written more on what GEO actually is if you want the full picture.

Look for a clear price, not a “let’s discuss”

There’s nothing wrong with a quote depending on scope: that’s normal and honest. What’s worth being wary of is an agency that won’t give you even a range until after a sales call. Reasonable pricing information should be available up front; ours is on our pricing page, with no form to fill out first.

Ask what they’d say no to

This is the most revealing question you can ask in a first call. A good agency will tell you honestly if your budget doesn’t match your ambition, or if a cheaper option would genuinely serve you better. If every answer is “yes, absolutely, we can do that,” you’re talking to a salesperson, not the person who’ll actually build your site.

A quick checklist

  • Load three of their sites on your phone, on mobile data, and time them
  • Ask exactly what post-launch support includes, in writing
  • Confirm you own the domain, hosting and source code outright
  • Ask what SEO work is actually included, specifically
  • Ask if they know what GEO is
  • Get a price range without booking a call first
  • Ask what they’d tell you not to do

If an agency handles all seven comfortably, you’ve found someone worth talking to seriously. If you’d like to see how we answer these for ourselves, our about page and pricing cover most of it, or you can just ask us directly.
